Our Story
Exodus 15:17 where it says...
After serving for 2 years as a Youth Minister, in late summer of 2002 after much prayer and seeking God’s will, Pastor James H. Veney heard the call of God to began holding bible study in his home. The bible study grew over time and in August 2003, the Lord led Pastor Veney to “go” and organize a Church to reach the unsaved, un-churched and the overlooked. After much prayer about a name for the church, the Lord gave Pastor Veney the name “Canaan”, referencing a “Place of Promise”. God also gave Pastor Veney these words out of Exodus 15:17 where it says...

“You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance, The place, O LORD, which You have made for Your dwelling, The sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established”

Seven committed persons came together with Pastor Veney to hear the Vision for “Canaan”. Following the Vision-casting session for the new church, with great energy and excitement, Canaan Christian Fellowship Church (CCFC) became the official name of the church. Canaan is a non-denominational, Bible teaching, Christ-Centered, progressive ministry physically worshipping in Landover, Maryland. CCFC had its grand Opening Worship Celebration on Sunday September 7, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at our former worship location, G. Gardner Shugart Middle School with nearly 200 well-wishers and supporters in attendance.
Canaan has grown both spiritually and numerically under the leadership of Pastor James H. Veney, Senior Pastor. The Disciples of CCFC have adopted and embraced the belief that everyone, no matter what their situation “Matters to God”.

We believe we have been raised up for such a time as this to embrace and bring in those who’ve can find healing and be nurtured by a loving and forgiving “relationship” with Jesus Christ. Our culture of acceptance and fostering God’s love has proven extremely successful in reaching a core audience of the next Generation.

The Canaan Church brings together those from all backgrounds to worship together. Canaan has several ministries and Life Groups available designed to build relationships, disciple people, grow them in their faith and meet the needs of both the church and community.
